For those wishing to pursue a career as an electrician, providing you with the technical knowledge and behaviours you require to be successful in this role.
Units include:
- termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords
- wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems.
You will learn how to install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments, working in both indoor and outdoor settings. Electrical equipment and systems may include switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, fault current protection switches, heating, lighting, air conditioning and metering equipment as well as fire alarm systems and renewable energy technologies.
You will need to have achieved maths and English GCSE grade 4 or above or Functional Skills Level 2.
You will attend college at our North Harbour Campus. College attendance is one day a week, the day will be confirmed soon. Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work.
You will spend 6 hours of your apprenticeship working towards your off-the-job learning, which can consist of college attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus a number of other tasks (more information can be shared).
You will build a portfolio of work and work place assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange on-site visits to observe your ability and skills in your daily role. It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with your employer. Learning in college will be delivered through a mixture of classes, work-related activities and independent study and research. Your final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment
AM2 Test - The AM2 is a robust, timed practical, requiring you to perform a set of common tasks and procedures that a full scope electrical operative might face when working in commercial or industrial premises as well as dwellings.
You will be entitled to register as an Eng Tech by the Engineering Council. You can also work towards higher apprenticeships at Levels 4 and 5.
