Journalism alumni receive top recognition

Two of our journalism alumni have received top industry recognition in a prestigious awards event.
The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) held its Awards For Excellence event at Hallé St Peter's in Manchester on Thursday 17th March.
Jody Doherty-Cove received Highly Commended in the Apprentice of the Year category and Connor Gormley received a Highly Commended accolade in the Trainee Podcast category.
Jody said: “I’m really happy to have received a Highly Commended Award in the Apprentice of the Year category. It feels fantastic to have all the work I’ve put in, the support from my editors, and the brilliant tutoring of Highbury College recognised in such a way.”
The annual event recognises the best journalism students, apprentices and trainees and highlights the achievement of individuals with promising careers ahead of them.
Connor said: “When I received the email from the NCTJ that I’d been shortlisted, I simply didn’t believe it and had to read it five times! Then being here in Manchester I’ve realised just how many talented people there are and what we’ve managed to achieve. I’m very proud… there are so many interviews that I’ve made for the programme that I’m really proud of. Every week there’s something different.”
NCTJ Course Leader Darren Sadler: “Hard work, enthusiasm, and a nose for a good story has certainly paid off for Jody and Connor. Both apprentices have shown flair and commitment to outstanding quality journalism. To be recognised by the NCTJ is a fabulous achievement for both.”
Jody and Connor achieved a Gold Standard in their Level 3 Diploma in Journalism, and both completed their overall Journalism Apprenticeships with Distinctions.
Jody works on The Argus in Brighton where he is now Digital Optimisation Editor. Connor is a trainee journalist for the Bognor Regis Observer and a regular contributor to Winchester Today’s ArtsPlus programme.
Journalism Assessor and Winchester Today Editor Kevin Gover added: “Connor is one of those people who is just so enthusiastic about everything he does. He manages to get the most out of everyone he speaks to – and every single interview is a must-listen. For Connor to have achieved a ‘Highly Commended’ rating in these awards is just fantastic.”
With more than 480 young reporters nominated, the pair joined just 60 shortlisted across several different categories. The awards were presented by Sky Sports News presenter Nick Powell.
The event is sponsored by top publishers and newspapers from the industry including the i, Financial Times, The Independent, News UK and Sky News.
