COPC Introduces Groundbreaking ‘Squirrel Psychology’ Course
PUBLISHED 01-04-2025

We are excited to announce the launch of a pioneering new course, Squirrel Psychology, set to begin in the upcoming academic year. This innovative programme will offer students a deep dive into the complex minds of one of the UK’s most fascinating creatures.
With a curriculum blending animal behaviour studies, cognitive neuroscience, and urban ecology, Squirrel Psychology will explore topics such as memory and problem-solving in squirrels, their intricate social structures, and their famous ability to outsmart garden defences. Students will also engage in hands-on research, studying local squirrel populations in Portsmouth’s parks and green spaces.
“This course is a response to growing interest in animal cognition and wildlife psychology,” said Dr. Hazel Nutley, Head of Animal Sciences at the College. “Squirrels exhibit remarkable intelligence, adaptability, and strategic thinking—traits that have long intrigued researchers. We’re thrilled to offer students the chance to study them up close.”
The programme has already caught the attention of animal behaviourists and conservationists, with guest lectures planned from leading experts in the field. In addition, the College is exploring partnerships with local wildlife organisations to provide students with real-world research opportunities.
Applications for Squirrel Psychology open next month, with spaces expected to fill quickly. Interested students are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment.
