Level 1 Diploma in Painting & Decorating

This course is ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in painting and decorating yet are currently not working in the industry.

Units include:

  • carrying out safe working practices
  • communicating with others
  • introduction to building studies
  • health and safety
  • introduction into the various types of paint
  • hanging wall and ceiling papers
  • textured coatings.

You will complete a minimum of 30 hours of on-the-job experience within the industry. You will have the opportunity to work on many live projects, including community and charitable projects, and benefit from site visits, industry talks and demonstrations from experts. You will also have an opportunity to take part in competitions, including WorldSkills and Johnstone's Paint, Decorator of the Year.

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including maths and English.

Attendance is two/three days a week, typically from 9am-4.30pm. A high level of attendance is required for successful achievement of the course.

You will complete a variety of practical assignments and in class assessments. You will also complete two online exams. You will log your learning journey in a diploma portfolio folder. All elements must be completed to successfully achieve the qualification.

School Leavers under the age of 19 do not have to pay fees on any full time courses, though may have to pay for their second year if turning 19 during their studies. If you’re aged 19 or over you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply for and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,000. If you are studying a part-time course and you receive one of the following benefits, or you depend financially on someone who does, you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support. You will, however, have to pay any awarding body/assessment fees (unless you are on a first full level 2 course). * If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receive other allowances, you may be eligible to claim concessionary rates. If you are entitled to a fee concession you will be asked to provide proof of your entitlement. It is essential that you inform us if your entitlement changes at any time during your course.

You could progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or into an apprenticeship.
